Record: 10-1, 7-1 Big Ten (conference champion)
Coach: Ron Turner (fifth season)
Key players: QB Kurt Kittner (2,994 yards, 23 TDs, 13 INTs), WR Brandon Lloyd (1,006 yards, 8 TDs), CB Eugene Wilson (6 INTs, 29 pass deflections), LB Jerry Schumacher (115 tackles, 16 for loss)
Season summary: The Illini shook off last year's 5-6 disappointment right from the start, blowing out Cal 44-17 and Louisville 34-10. A 45-20 defeat to Michigan to start Big Ten play tempered their 3-0 start, but the Illini won out, including beating both Purdue and Ohio State on the road. In addition to another stellar season from Kittner, Lloyd returned after missing all last season to become an elite receiver, and Wilson paced a defense that became much more aggressive.

Record: 9-3, 6-3 SEC (conference champion)
Coach: Nick Saban (second season)
Key players: QB Rohan Davey (3,347 yards, 18 TDs), WR Josh Reed (1,740 yards, 18.7 per catch), RB Dommanick Davis (406 yards, 5.4 yards per carry), LB Trev Faulk (118.5 tackles)
Season summary: That LSU would even play for an SEC championship, nevertheless win one, seemed implausible after the Tigers lost three of their first five league games, to Tennessee, Florida and Ole Miss. But in the wide-open SEC West, LSU was able to get back in the race by winning its last four regular-season games, including 41-38 over Arkansas and 27-14 over Auburn. Then the Tigers stunned 10-1 Tennessee in the league championship game to win their first SEC title in 13 years.
