Record: 6-5, 4-4 Big Ten (4th in league)
Coach: Joe Tiller (fifth season)
Key players: K/P Travis Dorsch (20-of-25 FGs, 48.4 yards per punt), DE Akin Ayodele (19 tackles for loss), S Stuart Schweigert (6 INTs)
Season summary: It was to be expected that Purdue's offense would struggle in its first season post-Drew Brees. But this much? Tiller's normally explosive Boilers finished last in the Big Ten and 105th nationally at 306 yards per game. The defense helped carry Purdue to a 4-1 start before the team dropped four of its last six. True freshman Kyle Orton showed promise upon replacing Brandon Hance at quarterback, but Purdue lost both games he started, to Indiana (13-7) and Notre Dame (24-18).

Record: 9-2, 6-2 Pac-10 (T2nd in league)
Coach: Mike Price (13th season)
Key players: QB Jason Gesser (2,729 yards, 25 TDs), WR Nakoa McElrath (1,047 yards, 9 TDs), S Lamont Thompson (8 INTs)
Season summary: Few outside Pullman, Wash., foresaw the Cougars -- 10-24 the previous three seasons -- starting this year 7-0 and contending for the Pac-10 championship. However, an explosive offense and bend-but-don't-break defense led Wazzu to four consecutive blowout victories to begin the season, followed by impressive wins over Stanford (45-39) and UCLA (20-14). Injuries started to bog down the Cougars late, but their only setbacks came against top 10 opponents Oregon (24-17) and Washington (26-14).
