Record: 7-4, 4-4 ACC (T4th in league)
Coach: Chuck Amato (second season)
Key players: QB Philip Rivers (65.2 percent completions, 2,586 yards), RB Ray Robinson (733 yards, 10 TDs), LB Levar Fisher (147 tackles)
Season summary: The momentum from Amato's exciting debut season appeared to be wilting when NCSU started 3-3, including a 45-37 loss to Clemson in which the defense allowed 517 total yards and six TDs by QB Woodrow Dantzler. But the Wolfpack rallied nicely, winning three consecutive games, including a stunning 34-28 upset at Florida State (the Seminoles' first-ever ACC home loss) and nearly knocking off Maryland, falling at the last minute in a game that iced the conference title for the Terps.

Record: 6-5, 4-3 Big East (t3rd in league)
Coach: Walt Harris (fifth season)
Key players: QB David Priestley (2,128 yards, 18 TDs), WR Antonio Bryant (15.7 ypc, 9 TDs), S Ramon Walker (120 tackles)
Season summary: It was definitely a tale of two seasons for the Panthers, who, a year after going 7-4, appeared to be headed in the tank after beginning this season 1-5, including an embarrassing home defeat to I-A newcomer South Florida. However, Pittsburgh rebounded with five consecutive victories to end the season, including a 38-7 blowout of formerly top 10 Virginia Tech. A lot of it had to do with Bryant, last year's Biletnikoff winner, who struggled with injuries and was a non-factor early, but later had consecutive games with at least 93 yards.
