Eric Crouch Eric Crouch further showed his versatility as he hauled in this 63-yard touchdown reception. AP

Sports Illustrated college football writer Ivan Maisel will break down the Heisman race every week of the 2001 season.

1. Eric Crouch, QB, Nebraska

Last week: 10-of-18 (55.6 percent), 102 yards, O TDs, 1 INT; 13 carries, 21 yards, 0 TDs; 1 reception, 63 yards, 1 TD.

2001 stats: 75-of-130 (57.7 percent), 1,088 yards, 7 TDs, 6 INTs; 149 carries, 798 yards, 14 TDs

He showed up in a big game. He ran. He threw. He caught the touchdown that broke the game open. So what's not to like?

2. Ken Dorsey, QB, Miami

Last week: 16-of-27 (59.3 percent), 192 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT

2001 stats: 100-of-168 (59.5 percent), 1,607 yards, 13 TDs, 4 INTs

Dorsey didn't have an outstanding game in the 45-3 victory over West Virginia. I'm trying to resist the lure of voting for him just because his team is winning. That's why Gino Torretta won the 1992 Heisman, and he shouldn't have. Not that I'm bitter.

T3. Kurt Kittner, QB, Illinois

Last week: Off week

2001 stats: 125-of-236 (53.0 percent), 1,839 yards, 14 TDs, 5 INTs;

Off last week.

T3. Julius Peppers, DE, North Carolina

Last week: Off week

2001 stats: 43 tackles (17 for loss), 8.5 sacks, 3 INTs

Off last week.

4. DeShaun Foster, RB, UCLA

Last week: 20 carries, 77 yards, 1 TD

2001 stats: 188 carries, 1,007 yards, 11 TDs

Off last week. Or maybe it just seemed like he was off.

5. Rex Grossman, QB, Florida

Last week: 27-of-35 (77.1 percent), 407 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs

2001 stats: 161-of-240 (67.1 percent), 2,636 yards, 24 TDs, 9 INTs

A friend of mine asked me, 'How's Grossman doing? His dad was my ophthamologist." That's a pretty good reason to vote for him. I just wish he would quit throwing the occasional pick.
