Penn State coach Paterno not thinking of retirement

Posted: Thursday January 02, 2003 2:40 PM

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- After completing his 37th season as Penn State's head coach, Joe Paterno said he has no plan to retire anytime soon.

"I think as long as I think I can do a decent job, I'll probably coach a few more," Paterno said Thursday, a day after his Nittany Lions lost 13-9 to Auburn in the Capital One Bowl. "Whether that's three years, five years, I don't know. I certainly have no plan to get out of it."

The coach has long denied rumors of his impending retirement, and his current contract runs through the 2004 season.

Paterno turned 76 last month, but as long as he remains healthy -- he was healthy enough this year to sprint across the field to catch an official he thought had made a bad call -- Paterno said he wouldn't let his age get to him.

"Physically, I feel great," Paterno said. "I have some arthritis in the neck once in a while, my arms ache a little bit once in a while, but other than that. ... Once in a while you say, 'Hey, I'm 76.' And no matter how you twist it, I'm 76 and I'm not naive about it. But, honest to God, I don't feel 76."
