Sports Illustrated senior writer Ivan Maisel will track the Heisman race for CNNSI.com all season long.

And now we bid a fond farewell to Rex Grossman.

Will he be the only man to finish second one season and get no votes the next? If so, the only other guy who may match that record is Al Gore.

1. Seneca Wallace, Iowa State, Sr., QB

Last Week: (vs. Texas Tech): 15-of-22, 148 yards, TD, 37 rushing yards, rushing TD
Season (7 games): 124-of-192 (65 percent), 1,801 yards, 10 TDs, 6 INTs, 6 rushing TDs

Texas Tech held down Wallace for two-plus quarters, which is more than anyone else has done this season. His touchdown run against the Red Raiders, which went to the Jack Trice Stadium end zone via Des Moines, is worth seeing again.

2. Onterrio Smith, Oregon, Jr., RB

Last Week (vs. UCLA): 25 carries, 152 yards
Season (6 games): 155 carries, 764 yards, 9 TDs, 127.3 ypg

The six-game, 100-yard streak looks a lot more impressive now that UCLA is on the list.

3. Maurice Clarett, Ohio State, Fr., TB

Last Week (vs. San Jose St.): 18 carries, 132 yards, 2 TDs, 1 TD reception
Season (6 games): 132 carries, 847 yards, 13 TDs, 141.2 ypg

Solid performance against San Jose State with 132 yards and two touchdowns as well as a touchdown catch. Consecutive games at Wisconsin and against Penn State give him the chance to break out.

4. Ken Dorsey, Miami, Sr., QB

Last Week (vs. Florida State): 20-of-45, 362 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs
Season (6 games): 99-of-185 (54 percent), 1,408 yards, 16 TDs, 7 INTs

Yes, 362 yards are outstanding. No, 20-for-45 with two picks is not.

5. Byron Leftwich, Marshall, Sr., QB

Last Week (vs. Buffalo): 28-of-35, 447 yards, 4 TDs
Season (5 games): 145-of-219 (66 percent), 1,795 yards, 14 TDs, 5 INTs

Buffalo is barely I-A competition, and the Herd senior made the Bulls pay.

6. Greg Jones, Florida State, Jr., RB

Last Week (vs. Miami): 31 carries, 189 yards, 1 TD
Season (7 games): 139 carries, 822 yards, 8 TDs, 117.4 ypg

Florida State junior rushed for 189 yards and a touchdown against what is supposed to be an outstanding defense. Jones appears here in honor of his giving hope to the rest of college football that Miami is not a lock.
