TEXAS LONGHORNS
Roy Williams University of Texas
State of the Team:
For a school with 22 wins over its past two seasons, so much of the attention on Texas is for what it hasn't done: beaten Oklahoma or won a Big 12 or national title. Such a climate produced an apropos slogan for the spring: "Finish." Head coach Mack Brown will be trying to "finish" with a new-look offense, however -- one that tries to exploit the mobility of new quarterback Chance Mock, who played beyond anyone's expectations in the spring and established himself as a clear No. 1 ahead of Vincent Young. Offensive coordinator Greg Davis is moving away from the pro-set heavy days of Chris Simms and implementing both the shotgun and option, more two-back sets and adding quarterback draws into the play-calling rotation. Defensively, big things are expected out of weakside linebacker Derrick Johnson, whom Brown said is having his best spring ever. All-around athlete Nathan Vasher will ensure little or no dropoff at the left corner position, which Rod Babers vacated for the NFL.
Up-and-Comer:
In the Orange-and-White game on March 29, Mock went 8-of-9 passing for 200 yards and two touchdowns. He led the offense on three straight scoring drives before bowing out, comfortably securing the No. 1 spot on the depth chart. And with a name like "Chance Mock," he's got to be good.
Lingering Questions:
(Although it has been lingering for two years now ...) Despite having an enormous amount of talent at his fingertips, why can't Brown turn the Longhorns into a title team? ... Will running back Cedric Benson -- who has earned a "fragile" label -- be able to endure the pounding of an entire season? Even more, will Benson's minor league career continue to infringe on his football? ... Will Mock live up to the reputation he built in the spring and pass well enough to let wide receiver Roy Williams make a run at the Heisman?
