Twice in the 1960s, Nebraska lost to Bear Bryant's Alabama
Crimson Tide in New Year's Day bowl games. "I don't
like to think that there's a guy around who can just walk
out on the field and beat me any time he wants to,"
said Nebraska coach Bob Devaney.
"Even if his team is very good." In their third
meeting, Bryant's second-ranked club wasn't nearly good
enough. A 77-yard punt return by Johnny Rodgers staked
Nebraska to a two-touchdown lead and completely demoralized
the Tide. At halftime Nebraska led
28-0. When it endedmercifullyDevaney had his national
championship and his revenge: the 32-point loss was the
worst Bryant ever
suffered.
