Earl Campbell (1977)
Each week of the 1999 college football season, CNN/Sports Illustrated brings you Heisman Heroes, an original series profiling some of the greatest college football stars of all time. Check in each week for a new installment. The state legislature officially designated him a Texas Legend. Earl Campbell, wearing the burnt orange of the University of Texas, ran his way to the 1977 Heisman Trophy and immortality in his own state. In his Heisman-winning season, Campbell led the nation in rushing and scoring - and wrapped up the award with a 222-yard performance in the regular season finale. "We are coming out of the tunnel at the A&M game and Coach Fred Acres, who was our head coach at that time, said, 'You give me anything over 100 yards today, and I'll promise you, you'll win the Heisman trophy,'" Campbell recalled. Campbell now runs his own business and works in the University of Texas Athletic Department - in the shadows of the Heisman trophy he won 22 years ago.
