Steve Spurrier (1966)
"Sort of the middle of the year I realized I had a good chance," Spurrier said. "Mainly because no one from the South had won it in about seven or eight years, and nobody else was doing a whole lot and our team was undefeated."
Ironically, the feat that likely clinched the award for Spurrier that season was a not a pass, but kicking a 40-yard field goal to give the Gators a dramatic win over Auburn.
"The other day," Spurrier said, "Alex Brown, one of our defensive ends said, 'Coach, what was it like to win the Heisman Trophy?' And I said, 'Alex, it's nice, but it's not nearly as nice as winning the national championship back in 1996.'"
Also in 1996, Spurrier earned another distinction, becoming the only Heisman winner to coach another Heisman winner when quarterback Danny Wuerffel received the honor.
