Shaun Alexander Bama's Shaun Alexander ran through the Gator defense for 200 total yards in the Crimson Tide's big upset. AP

By Albert Lin, CNN/SI

Another round of impressive performances by our top five candidates, but many of the remaining names below struggled. The race should become crystal clear by the end of the month.

The Top 10

1. Peter Warrick, WR, Florida State

The numbers: 6 rec., 67 yds., 3 TDs; 1 rush, 3 yds. (vs. Duke); Season: 36, 508, 4 TDs receiving; 7 rushes, 85 yards, 2 TDs rushing
Up next: An arraignment and probable plea bargain
The skinny: The way things are shaping up, Warrick will get the Heisman only if he steals that, too

2. Joe Hamilton, QB, Georgia Tech

The numbers: 19-31, 387 yds., 3 TDs, 2 INTs passing; 13 rushes, 87 yds., 1 TD rushing; Season: 65-91, 1,074, 9, 2 passing; 54, 244, 5 rushing
Up next: Saturday vs. North Carolina
The skinny: Shook off rust of 12-day layoff to come through with another huge day. His game is truly Flutie-esque.

3. Shaun Alexander, RB, Alabama

The numbers: 28 rushes, 106 yds., 3 TDs; 4 rec., 94 yds., 1 TD (vs. Florida); Season: 145, 720, 10 rushing; 11, 208, 3 receiving
Up next: Saturday, Oct. 16, at Mississippi
The skinny: Touchdown-maker had game-tying and game-winning scores against Gators. Well, when you include the extra points -- which wasn't always a given.

4. Ron Dayne, RB, Wisconsin

The numbers: 32 rushes, 161 yds., 4 TDs (vs. Ohio State); Season: 133, 773, 10
Up next: Saturday at Minnesota
The skinny: Made up for previous Saturday's second-half blanking with 125-yard, four-TD showing in mauling of Buckeyes.

5. Drew Brees, QB, Purdue

The numbers: 20-49, 293 yds., 1 TD, 1 INT (vs. Michigan); Season: 127-221, 1,608, 11, 4
Up next: Saturday at Ohio State
The skinny: Not his fault his receivers suddenly forgot how to hold on to the ball, but someone had to drop (pun intended), and this week was Brees' turn.

6. Doug Johnson, QB, Florida

The numbers: 22-31, 309 yds., 4 TDs, 0 INT (vs. Alabama); Season: 98-171, 1,441, 16, 6
Up next: Saturday at LSU
The skinny: Great numbers despite OT loss to Tide. Now if only he could kick extra points as well ...

7. Chad Pennington, QB, Marshall

The numbers: 18-35, 294 yds., 3 TDs, 0 INT (vs. Miami, Ohio); Season: 111-171, 1,569 yds., 14 TDs, 5 INTs
Up next: Thursday, Oct. 14, vs. Toledo
The skinny: The big mover on this week's list, more because of season-long excellence and everyone else's travails than his numbers vs. RedHawks.

8. Travis Prentice, RB, Miami (Ohio)

The numbers: 27 rushes, 131 yds., 0 TDs (vs. Marshall); Season: 163, 637, 8
Up next: Saturday, Oct. 16, vs. Toledo
The skinny: Finally got that average up, but team was whupped by Marshall and he scored no TDs on the ground; did make a 12-yard TD catch, though.

9. Quincy Carter, QB, Georgia

The numbers: 12-28, 110 yds., 1 TD, 0 INT; 11 rushes, 1 yd. (vs. LSU); Season: 77-137, 900, 6, 1 passing; 26, 95, 1 rushing
Up next: Saturday at Tennessee
The skinny: Will drop out of Top 10 with one more mediocre outing for him and his team; that could come Saturday in Knoxville.

10. Kevin Feterik, QB, Brigham Young

The numbers: 23-36, 289 yds., 4 TDs, 1 INT (vs. Utah State); Season: 118-179, 1,402, 12, 5
Up next: Saturday vs. California
The skinny: Cal's defense was supposed to be best in Pac-10; how'd it give up 31 to Washington State? Feterik is licking his chops.

Keep An Eye On ...

Major Applewhite, QB, Texas
The skinny: Completely befuddled by K-State defense into three interceptions and three fumbles.

LaVar Arrington, LB, Penn State
The skinny: Nitts didn't play this week; still debating whether to keep him on Watch list all season despite no chance of winning.

Darren Davis, RB, Iowa State
The skinny: Team got a breather this past weekend before heading to Lincoln to face Nebraska Saturday.

Josh Heupel, QB, Oklahoma
The skinny: 22-40, 168 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT -- not terrible numbers, other than the per-throw average. And the loss to Irish.

James Jackson, RB, Miami
The skinny: Mr. Jackson could find himself at the bottom of this page come next week after 'Canes travel to Tallahassee.

Jarious Jackson, QB, Notre Dame
The skinny: One-man show continues to roll for Irish: 15-21, 276, 2 TDs through the air; 15 carries, 107 yards, 1 TD on the ground.

Thomas Jones, RB, Virginia
The skinny: 83 yards against tough Virginia Tech defense is nothing to be ashamed of; should have better time with Duke this week.

Jamal Lewis, RB, Tennessee
The skinny: By all rights he should be long gone. So why do we keep giving him the benefit of the doubt?

Antwaan Randle El, QB, Indiana
The skinny: Absolutely HUGE in OT win over Illinois: 17-30, 265 yards, 1 TD passing; 37 carries, 157 yards, 3 TDs rushing. But average team will hold him back.

Tim Rattay, QB, Louisiana Tech
The skinny: With another bye week coming up, Rattay will get four weeks to heal his sprained foot and, incredibly, miss only one game.

Chris Redman, QB, Louisville
The skinny: Virtually identical numbers as Pennington against a tougher schedule, but his team is 2-2 while Pennington's is 5-0.

Cuts

Tee Martin, QB, Tennessee
The skinny: One of the Volunteers had to go, and with three interceptions and a fumble, it was easy to pick Martin.

Frank Murphy, RB, Kansas State
The skinny: Despite huge win, Murphy just isn't integral enough to Wildcats offense to deserve consideration.

Michael Wiley, RB, Ohio State
The skinny: For some reason, Buckeyes appear to have forgotten how to use this 1,000-yard rusher.
