Is Warrick done?

Suspended Seminole could still win, but Hamilton on top

Fan with sign This fan may not care about Peter Warrick's legal troubles, but it remains to be seen how Heisman voters will react. AP

By Albert Lin, CNN/SI

By popular demand, we are getting down to the nitty-gritty and cutting to our Top five candidates. But what a weird week in which to do so: subpar performances from three of last week's top five; an off week for another ...

And then there's Peter Warrick. If he misses minimal games (no more than two) and comes back better than before (i.e., Bobby Bowden gets him an extra few touches per contest), we still think he can win. Unless, for some reason, Heisman voters suddenly instill baseball Hall of Fame criteria and decide to use the kid as an example. And, lest we forget, as he so kindly reminded us, Warrick didn't shoot the President (who, perhaps, was forgiven for greater transgressions than Warrick).

The Top 5

1. Joe Hamilton, QB, Georgia Tech

The numbers: 14-26, 273 yds., 2 TDs, 2 INTs passing; 14 rushes, 77 yds., 1 TD rushing (vs. North Carolina); Season: 79-117, 1,347, 11, 4 passing; 68, 321, 6 rushing
Up next: Saturday at Duke
The skinny: He and Jackets didn't have greatest day (six turnovers), but he was the only one to put up good numbers and pull out a win.

2. Shaun Alexander, RB, Alabama

The numbers: No game this week; Season: 145, 720, 10 rushing; 11, 208, 3 receiving
Up next: Saturday at Mississippi
The skinny: Couldn't jump him past Hamilton without having played, but he had the best week of the top four.

3. Ron Dayne, RB, Wisconsin

The numbers: 25 rushes, 80 yds., 1 TD (vs. Minnesota); Season: 158, 853, 11
Up next: Saturday vs. Indiana
The skinny: Can't afford sub-100-yard games. Continues to get great mileage out of name recognition.

4. Drew Brees, QB, Purdue

The numbers: 24-39, 205 yds., 0 TD, 0 INT (vs. Ohio State); Season: 151-260, 1,813, 11, 4
Up next: Saturday vs. Michigan State
The skinny: Starting to suffer as Purdue goes through Big Ten gauntlet. First time in 19 games without a TD pass.

5. Travis Prentice, RB, Miami (Ohio)

The numbers: 34 rushes, 209 yds., 2 TDs (vs. Bowling Green); Season: 197, 846, 10
Up next: Saturday at Kent
The skinny: Also had a 30-yard TD catch. Workhorse's chances of winning are nil because of competition, but his numbers are there.

5a. Peter Warrick, WR, Florida State

The numbers: Suspended; Season: 36, 508, 4 TDs receiving; 7 rushes, 85 yards, 2 TDs rushing
Up next: Team plays Saturday vs. Wake Forest
The skinny: We are holding a spot just outside the Top 5 for Warrick, pending further developments in his situation.

Keep An Eye On ...

Major Applewhite, QB, Texas
The skinny: Great effort in rallying 'Horns past Sooners. Will be serious candidate next two years.

Quincy Carter, QB, Georgia
The skinny: He's been solid all year but never spectacular; wouldn't even be on list except for preseason hype.

Kevin Feterik, QB, Brigham Young
The skinny: Another 400-plus-yard, four-touchdown game -- though two interceptions were returned for TDs.

Jarious Jackson, QB, Notre Dame
The skinny: Produced five touchdowns in rout of Arizona State. And Notre Dame still means something (though increasingly less).

Doug Johnson, QB, Florida
The skinny: Another ho-hum game. Maybe we're giving him too many points for playing for Florida.

Chad Pennington, QB, Marshall
The skinny: Has a chance to showcase his skills to a national audience Thursday night.

Tim Rattay, QB, Louisiana Tech
The skinny: Can't drop him after an off week. No way he wins the trophy, but could still finish in top 10.

Chris Redman, QB, Louisville
The skinny: Might be first QB picked in April's NFL draft, but losses hurt Heisman shot.

Yer outta here ...

LaVar Arrington, LB, Penn State
The skinny: Haven't heard much from LaVar in a while, have we?

Darren Davis, RB, Iowa State
The skinny: Profile just isn't high enough, and he's not going to get 2,000 yards.

Josh Heupel, QB, Oklahoma
The skinny: Check back in 2000 when he and Sooners have a year in this offense under their belts.

James Jackson, RB, Miami
The skinny: Keeps losing opportunities as Kenny Kelly improves.

Thomas Jones, RB, Virginia
The skinny: Great game (185 yards, 2 TDs), but the Cavs lost to ... Duke.

Jamal Lewis, RB, Tennessee
The skinny: Perhaps we should have booted both he and teammate Tee Martin last week.

Antwaan Randle El, QB, Indiana
The skinny: As exciting as they come, but his team isn't up to snuff and option QBs aren't in vogue.
