Vol-atile: Lewis averaged 113.6 yards a game last season as a true freshman for Tennessee Craig Jones/Allsport

ATLANTA (CNN/SI) -- The college football season really kicks off this weekend with a full slate of games, including a number of impressive non-conference battles between ranked teams usually reserved for the bowls.

The top games this week include: No. 1 Ohio State beginning its run for a national championship in hostile Morgantown to face No. 11 West Virginia; No. 5 Michigan heading into very unfriendly South Bend to take on No. 22 Notre Dame.

No. 8 Arizona State and No. 18 Washington kick off the Pac-10 season with a bang with the winner getting a leg up in the conference race. No. 17 Syracuse begins its fierce September schedule by hosting No. 10 Tennessee sans Peyton Manning. No. 13 Penn State also has a tough test by hosting "trendy upset pick" No. 21 Southern Miss while No. 15 Colorado State tries to gain state supremacy when it faces off against Colorado in Mile High Stadium.

At the same time, some top teams are loading up on creampuffs to make sure they get off to a good start. No. 3 Florida and No. 6 Kansas State each take on Division I-AA teams in The Citadel and Indiana State, respectively. No. 4 Nebraska and No. 19 Georgia have just as easy tasks with UAB and Kent.
