The confrontation comes this Labor Day weekend. There is a scheduling problem. He wants to watch the first big weekend of college and pro football. She wants to rent Titantic, new to the video stores, and watch it a half dozen times.

He wants to see Notre Dame against defending champion Michigan, an unbelievable college collision to start the season. She wants to watch a large boat collide with an iceberg.

He wants to see how young men like Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf, do in their professional debuts. She wants to see see how Leonardo DiCaprio, another young man, does with Kate Winslet.

He wants to hear whacks and grunts from the field and the excited voices of John Madden, Keith Jackson and other venerable announcers from the booth. She wants to hear Celine Dion sing that song.

"You've seen all this already in the theatre," he says. "You know how it comes out, who lives who ides, the whole deal. Why would you watch it again?"

"You've watched these football games forever," she says. "What's the difference between one and another? Somebody throws a ball, somebody catches it. Somebody wins, somebody loses, they give the scores at the end. Then another game begins. Is this weekend is supposed to be anything different?"

He says this could be the best season ever, the Broncos trying to repeat, Barry Sanders on the run, Parcells with the Jets, Tampa Bay ready to whomp on a lot of people. She says this is the best movie ever, that she has cried every time she has seen it. Marriage counselors will be standing by.
