Notre Dame leaps into top 10 with upset of Michigan

NEW YORK (AP) -- Notre Dame's upset of Michigan did more than help the Irish
forget about a summer of lawsuits and rules violations -- it put
them back in the top 10.
The Fighting Irish, coming off their first six-loss season since
1986, beat the defending co-national champion Wolverines 36-20 on
Saturday and moved into the No. 10 spot in The Associated Press'
first regular-season Top 25 college football poll.
While the Irish leaped 12 spots in the poll, Michigan tumbled
eight places from No. 5 to No. 13. Notre Dame was last ranked in
the Top 10 late in the 1996 season.
Ohio State retained the No. 1 ranking with a convincing 34-17
victory over West Virginia, while the Mountaineers fell nine places
from No. 11 to No. 20.
The Buckeyes received 39 first-place votes and 1,708 points from
the 70 sports writers and broadcasters on the AP panel. Florida
State, which opened its season last week with a 23-14 win over
Texas A&M in the Kickoff Classic, remained No. 2 with 22
first-place votes and 1,667 points.
In the preseason poll, the Buckeyes led the Seminoles by only
five points and eight first-place votes. Now the lead is 41 points
and 17 first-place votes.
Two other games among ranked teams caused a shakeup in the
rankings: Washington moved up seven places to No. 11 after its
42-38 win over Arizona State, which fell from No. 8 to No. 14; and
Colorado beat Colorado State 42-14 to move into the rankings at No.
16, while the Rams fell out of the Top 25 after a No. 15 preseason
rating.
Florida, a 49-10 winner over I-AA The Citadel, was No. 3 with
four first-place votes and 1,571 points, while Nebraska (two
first-place votes, 1,546 points) remained No. 4 with a 38-7 win
over Alabama-Birmingham.
Kansas State, a 66-0 winner over I-AA Indiana State, moved up a
spot to No. 5 with two first-place votes and 1,418 points, with
UCLA following at No. 7, Tennessee at No. 8, Penn State at No. 9
and Notre Dame at No. 10.
UCLA opens its season next Saturday against Texas, which moved
into the rankings at No. 23 after a 66-36 win over New Mexico
State. LSU opens next week against Arkansas State, while the
Volunteers beat Syracuse 34-33 and Penn State defeated Southern
Mississippi 34-6 to give Joe Paterno career win No. 299.
Washington was No. 11, followed by No. 12 Virginia, No. 13
Michigan, No. 14 Arizona, No. 15 Georgia, No. 16 Colorado, No. 17
Wisconsin, No. 18 Texas A&M, No. 19 Syracuse and No. 20 West
Virginia.
Arizona, a 27-6 winner over Hawaii last Thursday night, moved up
three spots to No. 21, followed by four newcomers -- No. 22 Southern
California, No. 23 Texas, No. 24 Oregon and No. 25 Missouri.
In the coaches' poll, the Top 5 were: Ohio State,
Florida State, Nebraska, Florida, Kansas State.
Dropping out of the AP rankings were North Carolina, ranked 12th
in the preseason but a 13-10 loser to Miami (Ohio), Colorado State,
Michigan State and Auburn.
