Iowa State stuns Iowa 27-9 Cyclones win in-state battle for first time in 16 yearsPosted: Saturday September 12, 1998 06:08 PM
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- Joe Parmentier scored on two short runs Saturday and Darren Davis broke loose for 244 yards and a score as Iowa State beat Iowa 27-9 to win the intrastate battle for the first time in 16 years. Iowa (1-1) was plagued by mistakes in the kicking game that led to two early scores by Iowa State (1-1) and a raft of penalties that helped give the Cyclones their first victory in the series since a 19-7 triumph in 1982. It also was Iowa State's first road victory since a 23-22 defeat of Missouri on November 2, 1991. Iowa State was 0-30-1 during that skid. Iowa was unable to get a handle on Davis all day as he bounced, squirmed and darted for all but 10 of his team's net rushing yards on 37 carries while quarterback Todd Bandhauer ran Iowa State's offense to perfection. Bandhauer was 11-of-16 for 125 yards with no interceptions. He kept the Hawkeyes off balance with a variety of quick slant passes and throws into the flat. Iowa, which recorded eight sacks in last year's 63-20 victory, gave up six sacks against the Cyclones. Cyclones special teams also had a big hand, turning a blocked punt and fumbled kickoff return into points. The Hawkeyes, who were penalized 12 times for 77 yards, had to punt on their first possession. Kevin Wilson knifed through to block Jason Baker's kick and the Cyclones recovered at the Iowa 13. Davis ran for 2 yards and then 1 before scoring on a 12-yard draw play just 2:42 into the game, the first time since 1987 that the Cyclones scored first against Iowa. A few minutes later, Kahlil Hill, who returned a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns in last week's victory over Central Michigan, muffed Carl Gomez's punt that the Cyclones recovered on the Iowa 30. Jamie Kohl drilled a 28-yard field goal six plays later to give Iowa State a 10-0 lead with 5:04 remaining in the first quarter. Iowa got on the board on its next possession when Tim Douglas' 48-yard field goal hit the right upright and squibbed in. Iowa State went up 17-3 on Parmentier's 1-yard touchdown plunge that ended an 11-play, 80-yard drive. Iowa had a chance to snuff the drive, but Shane Hall let Bandhauer's pass go through his arms and into the hands of Damien Groce for a 13-yard gain on third-and-15 from the Iowa 40. The Cyclones elected to go for it on fourth-and-2, and Bandhauer faked a handoff to Davis and hit Andy Stensrud with a 21-yard throw and a first down at the Iowa 6. Two plays later, Bandhauer overthrew Damian Gibson in the back of the end zone on third-and-goal from the Iowa 1, but Matt Bowen was called for holding to give Iowa State a first down. Parmentier dove in for the score on the next play. Kohl added a 24-yard field goal for a 20-3 halftime lead.
