Top 25 Showdowns
By Albert Lin, CNN/SI
So much for Steve Spurrier picking Jesse Palmer as his starting quarterback ...
Since walloping Washington 55-7 Sept. 26, Nebraska has looked like anything but the Cornhusker teams we've come to expect. After gaining just 73 yards on the ground and escaping with a win against Oklahoma State, Nebraska managed a measly 141 rushing this past weekend against a better team, No. 18 Texas A&M, and suffered the consequences, dropping a 28-21 decision that ended its 19-game winning streak. The Aggies made plays on offense and defense, and the No. 2 Huskers uncharacteristically couldn't produce when needed.
Another surprise came between the hedges in Athens, where No. 4 Tennessee's defense manhandled No. 7 Georgia's multifaceted offense, coming away with a decisive 22-3 victory. The Vols may not miss star RB Jamal Lewis -- out for the season with a torn knee ligament --after all, because it's their defense that will likely carry this team to Tempe.
No. 5 Kansas State survived its first test, dominating for three quarters and then holding off No. 14 Colorado 16-9 in Boulder. The Wildcats' offense is brimming with talent if still a bit inconsistent, but their defense -- led by the best linebacking corps in the land -- will make up for some mistakes. And if you haven't seen Martin Gramatica kick the ball, make it a point because it's a real treat. You'll find yourself wondering how such a small person (5-foot-9, 170 pounds) can boot the pigskin so much farther than anyone else with so little effort.
In addition to Georgia, the other popular upset pick was No. 10 Arizona at home against No. 3 UCLA. All was well when the Wildcats held a 28-24 lead with 6:15 left in the third. But 12:05 later, it was 52-28 Bruins. And Heisman candidate Cade McNown still hasn't played even close to his ability.
No. 19 Southern Cal blew a 31-10, mid-third-quarter lead to California and fell 32-31. ... Georgia Tech demolished this season's roller-coaster team, No. 23 North Carolina State, 47-24. ... No. 12 Wisconsin and its secondary withstood a record day by Purdue's Drew Brees in a 31-24 win. The sophomore quarterback tied an NCAA record with 55 completions and set a new mark with a nearly inconceivable 83 attempts, for 494 yards and two TDs. Alas, the four INTs did his team in.
