Shootout Saturday
By Albert Lin, CNN/SI
What did they put in the water this week? High-scoring
affairs from coast to coast, led by a pair of Top 25
matchups.
We're waiting to see when UCLA gets itself into
trouble by allowing too many points. The No. 2 Bruins
survived a scare Saturday against No. 11 Oregon, needing
the overtime period to escape with a 41-38 win. The UCLA
defense came up big when it mattered -- stopping the Ducks on their OT possession -- but a national-championship-caliber team doesn't allow 27.6 points per game. Of course, when it scores 46.6 -- clearing 40 in every contest thus far this season -- maybe this isn't a problem. Quarterback Cade McNown finally looked like a Heisman favorite, overcoming a stomach virus to throw for nearly 400 yards.
Georgia Tech stunned previously unbeaten Virginia by
the same score as the UCLA-Oregon game, 41-38. The No. 7
Cavaliers led 38-17 five minutes into the second half
before the No. 25 Yellow Jackets exploded. Virginia picked
up 600 yards in total offense to Tech's 370, but Yellow Jackets receiver Dez White was a one-man wrecking crew, catching touchdowns of 69, 35 and 54 yards, the last one the game-winner with 4:40 remaining.
Kentucky handed No. 21 LSU its third straight loss,
39-36, on a 33-yard Seth Hanson field goal as time expired. The opportunity was set up by, of all things, a run. Facing third-and-12 from its own 24 with a minute left, the Wildcats faked a run up the middle and handed off to receiver Quentin McCord on an end around, picking up 38 yards and keeping the drive alive.
Upset of the weekend goes to Temple, which won its
first Big East road game -- ever -- at No. 14 Virginia Tech, 28-24. It was the first victory of the season for the Owls and the first loss of the year for the Hokies. True freshman quarterback
Devin Scott led Temple's comeback from a 17-0 deficit, along with nine other first-time starters.
We have to dip into I-AA for Saturday's best offensive
showcase: Florida A&M's 69-41 win over Howard. Both
Patrick Bonner and Ted White threw for more than 500 yards, and FAMU put up 725 yards of total offense. ... Finally, congratulations to North Illinois, which broke the nation's longest losing streak -- 23 games -- with a 16-6 defeat of Central
Michigan. The Huskies hadn't won since September 21, 1996.

John B. Boone from Raleigh, N.C., picks North Carolina State WR Torry Holt: "I realize that his team will have an up-and-down year, but this kid gives 110 percent every game. I wish the media would consider the player and his impact on the
team -- and not place a lot of weight on the won-loss
record of the team."
