Stil going ...
By Albert Lin, CNN/SI
Just wondering: How could Michigan State pound Notre Dame and hand Ohio State
its only loss, yet not even qualify for a bowl?
Based on what happened this weekend, we can project that the top three
teams will all finish undefeated, leaving one out of the national championship
picture and, of course, complaining about the inequities of the BCS. No. 1
Tennessee pounded Vanderbilt 41-0. Up next: Mississippi State, which snuck into
the SEC title game by upsetting Arkansas two weeks ago. No. 2 Kansas State's
next opponent, Texas A&M, lost to Texas on Friday. And No. 3 UCLA's upcoming
foe, Miami (Fla.) was ritualistically destroyed by Syracuse 66-13, the
Hurricanes' second-worst loss in school history.
So we were wrong last week when we suggested the only reason to watch
the Texas A&M-Texas game was Ricky Williams' pursuit of Tony Dorsett's Division
I-A career rushing mark. Williams broke the record in style on a 60-yard
touchdown run in the first quarter. But he fumbled twice, leading to a pair of
Aggies touchdowns, as No. 6 A&M took a 24-23 lead with 17 fourth-quarter points,
before Longhorns kicker Kris Stockton -- who had missed his previous two field-
goal attempts -- connected on a 24-yarder with :05 left to give Texas the win.
If they had only beaten Texas Tech a few weeks ago, the Longhorns -- not the
Aggies -- would be on their way to St. Louis for the Big 12 title game. Still,
it was an overwhelmingly successful season in Mack Brown's first year.
No. 11 Tulane capped its perfect season with a 63-30 rout over a potent
Louisiana Tech offense. The Green Wave won't get to play in a major bowl because
they're not high enough in the BCS standings (Hello, Liberty), but nothing can
diminish their feat of running the table.
No. 7 Arizona made its case for the Rose Bowl Friday by dusting off
one-time national-title pretender Arizona State 50-42 in a shootout which
featured 1,169 yards of total offense. Assuming UCLA is Tempe-bound, the
Wildcats are now the only choice as Wisconsin's opponent after conference
brethren Southern Cal shut out Jarious Jackson-less Notre Dame 10-0 on Saturday
and eliminated the No. 9 Irish from consideration. It will be the first trip to
Pasadena for Arizona.
Great games in a pair of Top 25 rivalry matchups: No. 16 Virginia
overcame a 29-7 halftime deficit to knock off Virginia Tech, 36-32. A little
further south the technology school prevailed: No. 17 Georgia Tech upended No.
12 Georgia, 21-19, on Brad Chambers' 35-yard field goal with :02 left.

UCLA at Miami (Fla.), 2 p.m. ET, ESPN
Bet the Bruins wish they had played this game when it was originally scheduled.
Will the Hurricanes step up after having been humilated by Syracuse?
|
Big 12 championship game: Kansas State vs. Texas A&M in St. Louis, 4:30 p.m. ET,
ABC
Wildcats (No. 3 in BCS) hurt by Aggies' loss to Texas, which lowers their
schedule strength while improving UCLA's. But they play the highest ranked
opponent this week.
|
SEC championship game: Tennessee vs. Mississippi State in Atlanta, 8 p.m. ET,
ABC Vols continue post-Peyton march to a national championship, though they don't
get another chance at Arkansas. Somehow, we doubt they mind.

It didn't take Auburn long to name Tommy Tuberville as Terry Bowden's
