Feeling bearish? Baylor to interview Southern Miss coach BowerPosted: Monday December 14, 1998 06:22 PM
HATTIESBURG, Mississippi (AP) -- Southern Mississippi coach Jeff Bower said Monday that he would travel to Baylor this week to discuss the coaching vacancy there. "I'm going to visit in the next couple of days," Bower said in a statement released late Monday by the USM sports information department. That was the only comment from Bower, who was not taking calls from the media. Baylor has received permission from Southern Miss to interview Bower, who is 50-39-1 in eight seasons at his alma mater. The Golden Eagles have had five straight winning seasons and are preparing for the second straight bowl game. Southern Miss (7-4) plays Idaho in the Humanitarian Bowl on December 30 in Boise, Idaho. The Eagles return to the practice field Tuesday to begin preparations for the bowl. Bower, who was a candidate for the Arkansas job last year and the Wyoming post in 1996, has a news conference scheduled Friday on the Hattiesburg campus to discuss the bowl game. Baylor officials have said that they want to hire a new coach by the end of the week. Former Alabama coach Gene Stallings has already interviewed for the position. Dave Roberts was fired December 6 after consecutive 2-9 seasons at Baylor. Bower signed a four-year contract extension at Southern Miss last February. His annual salary is $150,000 with a total package of $250,000. Roberts made about $400,000 annually at Baylor.
