Steele named Baylor football coach Posted: Thursday December 17, 1998 02:53 PM
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Kevin Steele, the Carolina Panthers assistant who was attacked on the sidelines last weekend by Kevin Greene, left the team Thursday to become coach at Baylor. Steele replaces Dave Roberts, who was fired this month after his team went 2-9 in each of his two seasons at the school. The school would not confirm the move, but Steele told the Panthers of his decision this morning. "I'm very upset," linebacker Jeff Brady said. "He's a quality coach. We lost Kevin Steele and that's going to hurt this program. There's not enough good coaches in this business. Kevin Steele is an outstanding coach." Greene went after Steele during the Panthers' loss to Washington on Sunday. The Panthers said Steele's interview with Baylor had been arranged before the scuffle. Steele, who has no head coaching experience, spent three seasons with the Panthers' inside linebackers after a six-year stint at Nebraska. He also was an assistant at Oklahoma State, New Mexico State and Tennessee, where he played from 1976-79. "He'll do a great job at Baylor, and I'm happy for him," Carolina quarterback Steve Beuerlein said. "The players will respect him and play hard for him." Other candidates Baylor considered included former Alabama and Texas A&M coach Gene Stallings and Southern Mississippi coach Jeff Bower. Roberts was hired this week as an assistant to Lou Holtz at South Carolina. He was Holtz's offensive coordinator at Notre Dame for three years.
