BYU's Miller transferring to Montana

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) -- Drew Miller, a back-up quarterback at
Brigham Young, has announced he'll transfer to the University of
Montana and enroll in classes at UM in the spring.
"I'm excited," Miller said Friday in an interview with the
Missoulian newspaper. "I just want to start over, and these last
two years of playing football I want to go out with a bang."
Miller was heavily recruited as a high school player in
Lakewood, Wash., visiting Arizona State, Notre Dame and Stanford in
addition to BYU.
He'd planned to redshirt his freshman year in 1997, but was
suited up midway through the season when starter Kevin Feterik
suffered a broken leg.
Miller was again relegated to a back-up role last fall when
Feterik returned to action. After he was kept on the bench for the
game at the University of Washington, near his hometown, Miller
threatened to leave the Cougars immediately.
BYU coach LaVell Edwards talked Miller into staying to finish
the season, but Miller said he would transfer after the Liberty
Bowl.
"I'm not leaving there with sour grapes. I'm not mad about
things," Miller said. "It's just the way things worked out."
The 6-foot, 190-pound Miller, who'll be a junior next season,
said Montana was a natural choice because of its passing offense
and because he wouldn't have to sit out a season after transferring
down to an NCAA Division I-AA school.
"I wanted to go I-AA so I didn't have to sit out, and there's
just not a better place in I-AA for me to go, or for anyone to go,
being a quarterback," Miller said.
Montana's 1998 starting quarterback, Brian Ah Yat, has used his
eligibility, leaving Miller in competition for the starting spot
with junior Sean Davis and freshmen John Edwards and Nick Walker.
Grizzlies coach Mick Dennehy said he wouldn't predict who will
start for UM next season.
"I think we need to wait until spring practice to really be
able to determine that," Dennehy said.
