Raising trout may be easier than running the Huskers, but at least his football teams didn't stink. Jonathan Daniel/Allsport

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Former Nebraska football coach Tom Osborne may no longer look over a roster of players but he is managing a school of his favorite fish.

Osborne, an avid fisherman who retired from coaching last year, is raising about 300 trout in ponds near his home in Lincoln and on his farm near Valparaiso, about 15 miles away.

He said he is raising the fish on the side for his own enjoyment.

"They're kind of like pets," Osborne said Thursday. "I catch them and put them back. I hardly ever eat them."

Some of the trout weigh a whopping 8 pounds, Osborne said. He had to run a well to his farm and buy aerators in order to keep fish in fresh, cool water.

Osborne revealed his new hobby while testifying before the Nebraska Legislature's Natural Resources Committee on a measure that would protect some of his favorite trout streams from potential livestock waste pollution.

Since retirement, Osborne has been on the speaking circuit, making product endorsements and coordinating his teen-mentoring program.
