LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Kansas wide receiver Michael Chandler had surgery after he was beaten and shot by masked intruders, police and university officials said.

Chandler was shot in the groin area about 5 a.m. Saturday in his Lawrence apartment and had surgery at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where he was in good condition Sunday, said Doug Vance, Kansas assistant athletics director.

Coach Terry Allen was with Chandler when he had the operation, Vance said.

"Our primary concern right now is for Michael and his family," Allen said.

Three masked intruders broke into Chandler's apartment and exchanged words with him before he was beaten and shot, according to Vance and Lawrence police Sgt. Susan Hadel.

A roommate who was asleep in another room told The Lawrence Journal-World that he was awakened by the gunshot, found Chandler on the floor and called 911.

No other details had been released by Sunday evening.

Chandler is a 5-foot-11, 195-pound junior from Kansas City, Kan. He was third on the team last season with 21 catches for 236 yards and a touchdown.

Chandler had been expected to sit out contact drills this spring while recovering from surgery to repair ligament damage in his left ankle.
