Clemson suspends RB Zachery Posted: Tuesday March 02, 1999 09:00 PM
CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- Clemson's leading rusher last season will sit out spring practice and the first game of the 1999 season, coach Tommy Bowden said. Bowden did not say why Travis Zachery was suspended Tuesday, but the redshirt freshman was arrested for disorderly conduct in January. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Zachery rushed for 635 yards and four touchdowns last season when the Tigers went 3-8. The Marietta, Ga., resident also caught 15 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown. Bowden also said two players will transfer and two more will not return to the team due to medical reasons. None of the four appeared in a game last season. Freshman running back Quincy Wicker and redshirt freshman tight end Jason Flanders will transfer. Junior offensive linemen Joedy Mitchell, who broke his leg last spring, and Mark Striewing, who hurt his back, will not return.
