Schnellenberger's coming back Florida Atlantic gets OK for football team in 2001Posted: Friday March 12, 1999 04:19 PM
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) -- The Board of Regents has given Florida Atlantic University permission to field its first football team in 2001 -- provided the school raises nearly $12 million before then. Florida Atlantic's proposal, approved Thursday, calls for raising $6 million to build a field house, $5 million to run the team and $600,000 to start a women's cross-country team and possibly a women's crew team. Federal regulations require schools give similar attention to men's and women's sports. President Anthony Catanese was confident the money would be raised. Confidence was so high, in fact, coach Howard Schnellenberger plans to start recruiting players in May. Home games are expected to be played at Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale for the first three years. "No matter what you do, no matter where you go, the one thing that brings school spirit to the students, alumni and the community is football," Catanese said. Florida Atlantic's Owls will begin playing in Division I-AA. Schnellenberger said he hoped the team would move to Division I within two years.
