Five months to go Notre Dame, Kansas to meet in Robinson ClassicPosted: Thursday March 25, 1999 03:10 PM
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Notre Dame officials said Thursday the Irish will host Kansas in the second Eddie Robinson Classic on Aug. 28 to open the 1999 season. It will be the first time the Irish and Jayhawks have met since 1938, and the Aug. 28 season opener is the earliest in Notre Dame history. The Irish return 11 starters from a 9-3 team that played in the Gator Bowl, while Kansas has 14 regulars back from a team that finished 4-7 in 1998. The classic benefits the Eddie Robinson Foundation and honors the former Grambling coach who retired after 55 years following the 1997 season. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1998 with a career mark of 408-165-15 and won more games than any coach in college football history. Proceeds from the game are used to offer scholarships each year to high school seniors and eight graders. The classic also gives Notre Dame seven home games in a season for only the second time. It also happened in 1988, when the Irish finished 12-0 and won their last national championship. The game will be televised on NBC, which owns the rights to broadcast all Notre Dame home games, with a 2:30 p.m. EST kickoff.
