UF's Cromartie out for spring Posted: Wed March 31, 1999 at 1:39 p.m. EST Independent Florida Alligator (U. Florida) GAINESVILLE, Florida (U-WIRE) -- Sophomore cornerback Robert Cromartie will miss the rest of spring practice after sustaining a dislocated left elbow last week during a fight with wide receiver Travis Taylor. The injury originally was reported as a sprained elbow. Cromartie and Taylor scuffled briefly Wednesday, and the injury occurred when Taylor wrestled Cromartie to the ground. "We started out playing and joking around and then tempers flared," Taylor said. "Things like that shouldn't happen. I should have controlled my temper." Also on the injury front, redshirt sophomore Luke Farmer tore the medial collateral ligament in his left knee during Friday's scrimmage. He sustained the same injury last season. "He's going to have to have surgery again," UF coach Steve Spurrier said. "He tore the same ligament he tore before. It's unfortunate. "They say it's about like coming back from the first one, so he'll have to go through it again." The news is much better for Doug Johnson, who had a pin removed from his fibula Monday. The senior quarterback has missed all spring but was back out at practice Tuesday. "It was just a real minor procedure," Johnson said. "They just made a little hole and backed the screw out. "I'm not going to be any less as far as where I am in the rehab process. I feel fine. It feels good." Quarterback shuffle The absence of Johnson this spring has allowed several of the younger quarterbacks a better chance to impress Spurrier. Walk-on Kevin McKinnon, a transfer from Northwestern who sat out last season, has made considerable improvement, and Spurrier said he is in a race with sophomore Tim Olmstead for the third-string position. "Kevin did some good things in the scrimmage on Friday," Spurrier said. "Kevin's not bad I tell you." Don't expect to see much of freshman Rex Grossman, who graduated early from high school, though. "He's learning a lot and he's improving," Spurrier said. "If a freshman can come in here and play, we're in dire straits, so he shouldn't have to come in here and play right away." Scrimmage set The Gators will scrimmage for the second time this spring Thursday at Florida Field. The scrimmage will start about 4:30 and is free and open to the public.© 2000 Sportsticker Enterprises, LP
