Ga. Tech's O'Leary gets slap on wrist Posted: Tuesday April 20, 1999 06:27 PM
ATLANTA (AP) -- Georgia Tech coach George O'Leary will be required to coach his season opener at Navy on Sept. 4 from the press box after an NCAA ruling that he was involved in a secondary violation. The NCAA had investigated reports that O'Leary had made a loan to former running back C.J. Williams. The organization ruled the violation was secondary. "We're relieved that the committee agreed with our finding that the violation was secondary in nature," athletic director Dave Braine said in a statement Tuesday. "This keeps alive the fact that Georgia Tech is one of the few schools in the nation that has never been on probation in any sport. We feel like we have been treated fairly." Braine said Williams repaid the loan promptly. He said the loan was made to help Williams register for class. Besides having to coach the season opener from the press box, O'Leary also will have to miss Tech's final spring scrimmage on Saturday. He also won't be allowed to recruit off campus this May.
