Tech sharp in final scrimmage Posted: Saturday April 24, 1999 04:10 PM
ATLANTA (AP) -- Quarterback Joe Hamilton threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another and tailbacks Joe Burns and Phillip Rogers each scored twice in Georgia Tech's final spring scrimmage Saturday. Another tailback, redshirt freshman Gordon Clinkscale, ran for 101 yards on seven attempts, including an 80-yard TD run on his first carry. Tech did it without coach George O'Leary. Offensive coordinator Ralph Friedgen directed the scrimmage in the absence of O'Leary, who was barred by the NCAA for coaching in the game because of an improper loan to former running back C.J. Williams. In addition, O'Leary cannot recruit off campus in May and must coach from the press box in the Sept. 4 opener at Navy. Hamilton completed 12 of 19 passes for 127 yards, including a pair of 12-yard touchdown passes to fullback Ed Wilder. Hamilton also ran for a TD and added a two-point conversion. Burns carried 11 times for 62 yards and scored on runs of 2 and 25 yards, while Rogers gained 89 yards on 13 carries. He had TD runs of 30 yards and 2 yards.
