Steinkuhler may face assault charge Posted: Sunday June 06, 1999 03:00 PM
SYRACUSE, Neb. (AP) -- Former Nebraska football star Dean Steinkuhler has been arrested on suspicion of domestic assault after his wife called police during a disturbance at his home. Deputies arrested Steinkuhler on May 29 after being called to the house, Otoe County Sheriff Jim Gress said. Steinkuhler was released from jail hours later on $1,000 bail. "He's quite a big guy, so he can make you kinda nervous," Gress said. "But he did not resist arrest. He was cooperative." Otoe County Attorney Max Kelch has not received reports on the incident to decide if charges will be filed. The victim had only minor injuries and did not require hospitalization, Gress said. The assault was classified as a misdemeanor. Steinkuhler, 38, who is a member of the Syracuse City Council, did not immediately return a telephone call made to his home Sunday by The Associated Press. Steinkuhler won the Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy in 1983 as the nation's top college lineman. He played eight years as an offensive lineman for the NFL's Houston Oilers and in 1996 was inducted into the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame.
