Mich. St. tailback faces arraignment Posted: Friday June 11, 1999 06:40 PM
KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan State tailback Little John Flowers will be arraigned this week on charges of gambling and interfering with police, court officials said Friday. The charges stem from a June 5 encounter with police at a Kalamazoo park. University athletic officials say the 19-year-old player was caught shooting dice with friends and resisted arrest. He was later released on bond. Flowers was named in a warrant issued Thursday, a Kalamazoo District court administrator said. His arraignment is June 18. Coach Nick Saban has suspended Flowers from the team indefinitely, Michigan State sports information director John Lewandowski said Friday. "Coach Saban will re-evaluate his status after the court process is completed," Lewandowski said. "Since this was his second incident, Coach saw it fit to suspend him at this point." The 6-foot, 200-pound sophomore was expected to compete for the starting tailback job. Flowers pleaded guilty in February to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly jostling in connection with a 1998 brawl. Gambling and interfering with a police officer are also misdemeanor charges. Flowers is not the only Michigan State athlete facing criminal charges this summer. At a hearing June 4, basketball stars Mateen Cleaves and Antonio Smith pleaded innocent to misdemeanor charges of larceny in connection with the theft of a bottle of beer from an East Lansing 7-Eleven. On June 9, fullback Bill Greene was indefinitely suspended from the football team after being charged with a misdemeanor related to the March riot in East Lansing. Green was already on probation for other run-ins with the law, including the 1997 theft of a dorm room.
