No parking UCLA players accused in handicapped permit fraudPosted: Friday July 09, 1999 01:28 AM
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Fourteen UCLA football players were charged with illegally obtaining handicapped parking placards so they could avoid paying parking fees. The players allegedly submitted applications to the state Department of Motor Vehicles that contained phony information about physical handicaps and the signatures of nonexistent physicians, Deputy City Attorney Brian Williams said. The defendants used the handicapped placards for ease of parking on and off campus, and to avoid paying UCLA parking fees, according to University of California, Los Angeles police detectives who investigated the case. A telephone message left for UCLA sports spokesman Steve Roark wasn't immediately returned. Thirteen defendants were each charged with a count of illegally possessing a handicapped placard and a count of giving false information to DMV. Each misdemeanor count carries a maximum six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. They were Ali Abdul Azziz, 22, of Sherman Oaks; Robert Wayne Thomas, 18, of Imperial; Damian Dominic Allen, 21, of Van Nuys; Marques Deon Anderson, 20, of Long Beach; Oscar Cabrera, 21, of Highland Park; James Michael Ghezzi, 22, of Mar Vista; Duval Jerome Hicks, 23, of Sherman Oaks; Ryan Clint Nece, 20, of Palms; Durell Rayton Price, 21, of Newhall; Mark Reynosa, 20, of Sylmar; Ryan Jason Roques, 21, of Mar Vista; Craig Hilary Walendy, 21, of Westlake; and Anthony Dewayne White, 20, of Sherman Oaks. A 14th defendant, Deatra Clinton, 21, of West Covina, allegedly obtained two placards so he was charged with four misdemeanor counts. They will be arraigned July 28.
