Gone before the start Freshman QB Losman to transfer from UCLAPosted: Thursday July 22, 1999 02:46 PM
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Highly regarded freshman UCLA quarterback J.P. Losman has decided to transfer to another school. "J.P. told me he does not want to redshirt this year, and I think he's concerned with the number of quarterbacks we have in the program," UCLA coach Bob Toledo said in a statement. "I told him that there will be competition anywhere he goes. ... and [he] should be patient." UCLA granted Losman's release to transfer. He will have to sit out the 1999 season if he transfers to another Division I school. Regarded one of the country's finest quarterbacks as a senior, Losman graduated early to enroll at UCLA in time for spring practice. He was listed fifth on the depth chart, behind junior Drew Bennett, sophomore Scott McEwan and redshirt freshmen Ryan McCann and Cory Paus, entering the start of training camp next month. The Bruins have to find a replacement for four-year starter Cade McNown, an All-American last season and the first-round draft choice of the Chicago Bears in April.
