KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee defensive end Shaun Ellis pleaded guilty Friday to a misdemeanor assault charge for striking a woman in the head with a drinking glass during a party last April. In return for the reduced charge, Ellis, 22, has to pay the woman's medical bills, perform five days of public service, maintain a 2.5 grade point average and undergo assessment to determine if he needs alcohol or drug treatment. He originally was charged with felony assault. General Sessions Court Judge Brenda Waggoner ordered Ellis to pay the woman's $312 emergency room bill and any other medical bills she incurs from the incident until Oct. 29. Ellis struck the woman, who was an acquaintance, with the glass after she threw a drink in his face at a party April 28, defense lawyer Patricia Long said.
