Fry has prostate cancer Iowa's winningest coach keeping secret since springPosted: Tuesday August 03, 1999 02:28 AM
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) -- Former Iowa football coach Hayden Fry is being treated for prostate cancer, the Quad City Times reported. The newspaper reported Monday that the 70-year-old Fry has undergone treatment within the past three months for the ailment that was discovered this spring, but Fry is remaining secretive about it. Fry announced his retirement as Iowa's football coach in November. The newspaper said former Iowa State basketball coach Johnny Orr, an old friend of Fry's, told a group attending a charity event he hosted Saturday that the former Iowa football coach is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. Orr on Monday denied making the statement, but the Times said it stood by its story. Fry was scheduled to appear at the golf event and was forced to cancel because of the ailment, Orr said. He added that he didn't know how serious the situation was, but that Fry seemed to be doing well. The winningest coach in Iowa football history did attend the 33rd Golden Harvest I-Club Banquet in Iowa City on Saturday night, where he was named as that group's "Hawk of the Year." Prostate cancer is, one of the most common forms of cancer in men and if detected early, it can be treated with radiation or surgery.
