... But she'll miss the USC game Dubar to be released from prison one year earlyPosted: Wednesday August 04, 1999 04:35 PM
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Kimberly Dunbar, the woman who embezzled more than $1.2 million from her employer and spent some of the money on Notre Dame football players, will be released from prison in October, a year earlier than expected. Her attorney, William Stanley, said Dunbar's release was moved up to Oct. 17 because she earned an associate's degree from Indiana while in prison, qualifying for a new state law that rewards inmates for earning educational degrees. Last September, Dunbar pleaded guilty to two Class C felony theft charges for embezzling the money. She was sentenced to four years in prison, meaning she would be eligible for release after two years with good behavior. She was also ordered to serve probation until 2014. Dunbar admitted to spending much of the money on up to a dozen current and former Notre Dame players, leading to an investigation into the program. The school appeared before the NCAA Committee on Infractions in June and is still awaiting word on what penalties it may face because of Dunbar's interaction with players. The NCAA ruled she was a school booster through her association with the now-defunct Quarterback Club.
