Jarious Jackson Notre Dame's Jarious Jackson shaked-and-baked around the Michigan defense for a 12-yard touchdown run in the first half. AP

Each Sunday, CNNSI.com will hand out its college football awards for the games just played. The first edition is based on the games of Thursday - Saturday Sept. 2-4.

Player of the Week

Major Applewhite, QB, Texas. Isn't it ironic - the only way heralded frosh Chris Simms got in the game was Applewhite was too good. The sophomore finished 17-of-27 for 353 yards and three TDs against Stanford, leading the Longhorns to six straight scores before exiting the 69-17 rout early.

Team of the Week

Colorado State. After falling short of lofty expectations a year ago -- no bowl bid after preseason Top 25 rankings - Sonny Lubick's crew came out of the gate smoking and stunned rival Colorado 41-14.

Unsung Hero

Alex Brown, DE, Florida. The Gators' defense received much criticism for getting torched by Western Michigan, but Brown's 2.5 sacks and fumble recovery deep in enemy territory greatly aided the offense.

Play of the Week

Notre Dame QB Jarious Jackson's improbable 12-yard touchdown dash in which he eluded nearly the entire Michigan defense and finished with a 360-degree spin into the end zone.

Best Coaching Call

Notre Dame offensive coordinator Kevin Rogers. Down 19-14 late and facing fourth and 1 at the Michigan 20, the Irish took a page from old - specifically Desmond Howard - and threw to a wide-open Jabari Holloway in the end zone out of a run formation.

Hit of the Week

Western Michigan CB Eric Nunlee. With Florida receiver Darrell Jackson about to haul in yet another Doug Johnson completion, Nunlee's helmet met him mid-air, promptly sending both Jackson and ball to the ground.

Quote of the Week

"I've never tackled anybody like him. We were just bouncing off him, and he just kept running."
-- Murray State defensive tackle Steve Williams on Wisconsin's Ron Dayne.
