Best of games, worst of games After up-and-down Michigan performance, QB presses onPosted: Tuesday September 07, 1999 08:48 PM
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Jarious Jackson says he's not about to let a little turf toe keep him out of Notre Dame's game with Purdue on Saturday, even if he's not expected to practice much this week. "I've always had bad dogs," he said. "So it's not a big deal. It's just a little sprained toe. I've deal with it since I've been here. My toes would always cramp on me." Still, Irish coach Bob Davie said the injury to Jackson's right big toe will likely keep him out of practice most of this week, which isn't a good sign after Jackson had one of his best -- and worst -- games against Michigan on Saturday. Though he threw for a career-best 302 yards in Notre Dame's 26-22 loss to the Wolverines, he also had five errant option pitches, was sacked four times, fumbled as he was sacked near the Notre Dame goal line and threw his fourth interception of the season. Backup Arnaz Battle has been taking snaps with the first-team offense this week with Jackson banged up. "Everyone around here is hoping he plays. If I had to bet, I would say he will play," Davie said Tuesday. Turf toe is a very painful injury that is a sprain of the joint of the big toe near the ball of the foot. Jackson said he was hurt early in the third quarter on Saturday when a Wolverine defender hit him from the side and bent his foot the wrong way. But the injury didn't force him from the game.
