CNN/SI Performers of the Week Posted: Sunday September 12, 1999 03:50 PM
Each Sunday, CNNSI.com will hand out its college football awards for the games just played. The first edition is based on the games of Thursday - Saturday Sept. 9-11.
Player of the WeekJoe Hamilton, QB, Georgia Tech. Call it backyard (Atlanta) bias, call it rooting for the little guy, but this week's top honor disregards that whole loss thing. In the biggest game of his career, Hamilton did everything in his power to hang with No. 1 Florida State, completing 22 of 25 passes (including 14-of-14 second half) for 387 yards (second-best in school history) and four touchdowns (ditto), while running for another score.
Team of the WeekClemson. In a week of few upsets, the Tigers' domination of Top 25 Virginia -- a week after struggling mightily against Marshall -- was a major step for new coach Tommy Bowden and will likely have the Southeast buzzing all week.
Unsung HeroMike Rose, DE, Purdue. Drew Brees and the offense were the featured attractions against Notre Dame, but Rose stopped two of Notre Dame's last three drives with a leaping interception and sack of Jarious Jackson that caused the clock to run out.
Play of the WeekUNLV DE Kevin Thomas' game-winning 99-yard fumble return for a touchdown with no time remaining against Baylor. Keep in mind, the Bears lost the week before on a missed extra point in overtime
Best Coaching CallFlorida State's Bobby Bowden. In one of several unconventional uses of his highly skilled athletes, Bowden had Peter Warrick line up at quarterback, from where he dashed into the end zone nearly untouched.
Hit of the WeekThis space is being used this week to spotlight the worst hit of the week, Penn State LB LaVar Arrington's mysterious assault on Pitt punter Greg DeBolt that somehow got brushed over in postgame interviews
Quote of the Week"I don't want to play one more second of that game."-- Florida State coach Bobby Bowden after surviving Georgia Tech.
