Performers of the Week Posted: Sunday September 26, 1999 02:46 PM
Each Sunday, CNNSI.com will hand out its college football awards for the games just played. This edition is based on the games of Thursday - Saturday Sept. 23-25.
Player of the WeekTroy Walters, WR, Stanford. Here's a case where the numbers truly never lie: nine catches, 278 yards and three touchdowns (one for 98 yards!) in a 42-32 upset of UCLA. If the pint-sized senior was giving an acceptance speech, he would likely thank Cardinal backup QB Joe Borchard who stepped in for Todd Husak and promptly hooked up Walters with his career day.
Team of the WeekDuh, East Carolina. Not having been back to their Floyd-soaked homes in over a week, the Pirates rallied from a 23-3 third-quarter deficit against No. 9 Miami behind poised QB David Garrard and super scat-back Jamie Wilson. Runner-up: Oklahoma. Bob Stoops' air show overwhelms even Chris Redman and Lousiville.
Unsung HeroTerence Kitchens, K, Texas A&M. Kitchens made incredible 62-yard field goal to end the first half against Southern Miss.
Play of the WeekPenn State QB Rashard Casey's improbable touchdown scramble against Indiana. The run was officially 31 yards, but Casey easily tripled that cris-crossing the field, all the way dodging traffic better than a rush-hour commuter.
Best Coaching CallBill Snyder, Kansas State. With his team down 28-7 to Iowa State and viewers around the country thinking, "Well, the Wildcats' days are numbered," Snyder rallied his team at halftime, substituted QBs and watched his team put up a 28-0 second half.
Hit of the WeekColorado LB Jashon Sykes, who timed the snap count perfectly to nail Washington QB Marques Tuiasosopo during his drop back, forcing a fumble that was returned for a touchdown.
Quote of the Week"At least we won."-- Tennessee WR Cedric Wilson after the Vols' last-minute win against Memphis.
