Bill Burke Bill Burke completed 21 of 36 passes and became the first player to pass for 400 yards for Michigan State. AP

Each Sunday, CNNSI.com will hand out its college football awards for the games just played. This edition is based on the games of Thursday, Oct. 7 - Saturday, Oct. 9.

Player of the Week

(tie) Bill Burke, QB, and Plaxico Burress, WR, Michigan State. It would be impossible to give it to one and not the other, as the Spartans' passing game shredded the normally impenetrable Michigan secondary. Burke threw for 400 yards; Burress caught 10 balls for 255. Runner-up honors go to Army RB Michael Wallace, who ran for 269 yards and four TDs Thursday night against Louisville.

Team of the Week

Michigan State. Sensing a pattern here? There's no overemphasizing the magnitude of MSU's win over the rival Wolverines, which may be considered an upset, but more is a statement that the Spartans plan to make a run at the Big Ten and/or national title after several years of disappointing showings.

Unsung Hero

Derrick Nix, RB, Southern Miss. Carried the ball 42 times for 171 yards against East Carolina as the Eagles took control of the Conference USA race.

Play of the Week

Miami WR Santana Moss's split-second change of direction just after the catch to elude two defenders and sprint 80 yards to the end zone.

Best Coaching Call

Barry Alvarez, Wisconsin, via the Mayo Clinic. Though we don't know exactly what was said on the calls to Minneapolis, it worked, as the Badgers prevailed in OT.

Quote of the Week

"You hold so much stuff in and once you get that 'W,' you can let it loose. It's like having diarrhea at the mouth."

-- Michigan State CB Amp Campbell after beating Michigan.
