Groovy times for Spartans MSU reaches Top 5; Pac-10 teams absent from poll

NEW YORK (AP) -- How big was Michigan State's win over Michigan? Big enough for the Spartans to leap into the top five of The Associated Press' Top 25 college football poll for the first time in 32 years. With its 34-31 win over the Wolverines on Saturday, Michigan State (6-0) jumped six places to No. 5 in this week's AP poll. Michigan (5-1), meanwhile, fell seven spots to No. 10. It also marks the first time the Spartans have been ranked in the top 10 since finishing the 1987 season at No. 8. The last time Michigan State cracked the top 5 was a No. 3 ranking on Sept. 18, 1967. Florida State (6-0) and Penn State (6-0) remained 1-2 for the fourth straight week following balloting Sunday by the 70 sportswriters and broadcasters on the AP panel. Nebraska (6-0), a 49-14 winner over Iowa State, moved up one spot to No. 3, followed by No. 4 Virginia Tech and Michigan State. No. 6 Tennessee, No. 7 Florida, No. 8 Georgia Tech, No. 9 Kansas State and Michigan rounded out the top 10. The Seminoles, who beat Miami 31-21 on Saturday, had 63 first-place votes and 1,743 points, while the Nittany Lions, 31-7 winners over Iowa, had six first-place votes and 1,678 points. Virginia Tech (5-0), which routed Rutgers 58-20, had the other first-place vote. Alabama was No. 11, followed by No. 12 Mississippi State, No. 13 Texas A&M, No. 14 Georgia, No. 15 Marshall, No. 16 Syracuse, No. 17 Wisconsin, No. 18 Ohio State, No. 19 Texas, No. 20 Purdue, No. 21 BYU, No. 22 Mississippi, No. 23 East Carolina, No. 24 Miami and No. 25 Southern Mississippi. Georgia fell four places after its 37-20 loss to Tennessee. Mississippi and Southern Mississippi, the two new entries this week, join Mississippi State in the AP poll. Minnesota and Southern California dropped out of the Top 25. With USC gone, the Pac-10 has no teams in this week's Top 25. In the USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll, the top 5 are: Florida State, Penn State, Nebraska, Virginia Tech and Tennessee.
