Performers of the Week Posted: Sunday October 17, 1999 03:45 PM
Each Sunday, CNNSI.com will hand out its college football awards for the games just played. This edition is based on the games of Thursday, Oct. 14 - Saturday, Oct. 16.
Player of the WeekShaun Alexander, RB, Alabama. With all due respect to Purdue numbers whizzes Drew Brees and Chris Daniels, Alexander gets the nod for what is fast becoming his "average" day: 36 carries, 214 yards (against a defense that had been surrendering 45 a game) and three TDs, keying the Tide's 30-24 victory over SEC West foe Ole Miss.
Team of the WeekVirginia Tech. So maybe Syracuse isn't what it used to be. But so far this season, it hadn't been far off (remember Michigan?), making the Hokies' 62-0 demolition that much more staggering.
Unsung HeroAnthony Wajda, FS, Kentucky. Had two interceptions -- his third and fourth in last three games -- as the often forgotten Wildcats defense held LSU to 227 yards in a 31-5 win.
Play of the WeekPenn State LB LaVar Arrington's LaVar Leap II, in this case a flat-out hurdle of Ohio State RB Jonathan Wells in the backfield to get to QB Steve Bellisari .Best coaching callMount Union (Ohio) coach Larry Kehres for keeping the Purple Raiders focused and hungry 48 straight times.Hit of the WeekVirginia Tech CB Anthony Midget (too easy), who sent both Syracuse receiver Quinton Spotwood and the ball flying immediately after a catch.Quote of the Week"We thought we could have scored 50 on [Auburn coach] Tommy Tuberville, but we couldn't do it."-- Florida's Steve Spurrier after the Gators' ugly 32-14 win over LSU. .
