Fighting Illini players celebrate their upset of Michigan. AP

Each Sunday, CNNSI.com will hand out its college football awards for the games just played. This edition is based on the games of Saturday, Oct. 23.

Player of the Week

Ron Dayne, RB, Wisconsin. This stat has shown up in similar form twice on this site already, but it bears repeating: In a 40-10 defeat of Michigan State, Dayne ran for 214 yards. The Spartans had given up 279 rushing yards the seven previous games. Oklahoma QB Josh Heupel deserves mention here as well for his scorching of Texas A&M in a 51-6 "upset."

Team of the Week

Illinois. Coming back from 27-7 to knock off Michigan on the road could not have been a more improbable of outcomes for a program that had previously failed to raise an eyebrow during coach Ron Turner's first three seasons. Runner-up: Oklahoma.

Unsung Hero

Kendrell Bell, LB, Georgia. Led a lethal Bulldogs pass rush that sacked Kentucky QB Dusty Bonner 11 times, while also blocking a punt that set up a touchdown.

Play of the Week

Penn State DE Courtney Brown gives the Nittany Lions their third spot of the year in this category with his basketball-like tip of a Drew Brees screen pass, with which he then caught and went the other way for six.

Best coaching call

Tennessee's Phil Fulmer, who, down 7-0 in the second quarter and facing fourth and 1 at the Alabama 9, passed on a field goal in favor of using Jamal Lewis over the top. The Vols went on to score the tying TD and kept the momentum from there.

Quote of the Week

"She's a traitor."
-- Clemson's Tommy Bowden chiding his mother Ann for siding with husband Bobby in the Florida State-Clemson game.
