Player of the Week

Travis Prentice, RB, Miami of Ohio. With apologies to Ron Dayne and Thomas Jones, Prentice gets the nod for a game against Akron in which he ran for 376 yards, accumulated 411 all-purpose yards and got the three TDs needed to shatter Ricky Williams' NCAA career scoring records.

Team of the Week

(tie) Minnesota, Oregon State. The Gophers shocked No. 2 Penn State to likely wrap up their first bowl bid in 14 years, while the Beavers topped Cal to clinch their first winning season since 1971.

Unsung Hero

Shayne Graham, K, Virginia Tech. > His game-winning 45-yard field goal against West Virginia was no accident -- Graham holds Big East records for scoring and longest field goal (52).

Play of the Week

Minnesota WR Arland Bruce's improbable reception to set up the Gophers' upset of Penn State. On 4th and 16, QB Billy Cockerham launched a heave down the left sideline that deflected off Ron Johnson's chest into Bruce's hands just before hitting the ground.

Best coaching call

Virginia coach George Welsh, for sticking with struggling QB David Rivers against Georgia Tech in place of the injured Dan Ellis. Rivers led the Cavs' comeback to knock off No. 7 Tech.

Quote of the Week

"We worked so stinking hard during the offseason. You're sore, your body's absolutely shot, and it comes down to this -- a field goal."
-- Penn State's Mike Cerimele after the loss to Minnesota.
