Performers of the Week Posted: Sunday November 21, 1999 10:11 PM
Each Sunday, CNNSI.com will hand out its college football awards for the games just played. This edition is based on the games of Thursday, Nov. 18 - Saturday, Nov. 20.
Player of the WeekLaDainian Tomlinson, RB, TCU. Hard to pick against a guy who ran for an NCAA-record 406 yards. We may hear more about this guy next year because the junior has rushed for 1,725 yards this season. Might be a darkhorse to watch in next year's Heisman race, much in the same manner of Iowa State's Troy Davis a few years ago.
Team of the WeekFlorida State. The top-ranked Seminoles capped an unbeaten season and secured a Sugar Bowl bid by taking out No. 3 Florida 30-23.
Unsung heroSebastian Janikowski, K, Florida State. Booted three field goals, including a 54-yarder following a penalty, and gave the Seminoles a rare solid kicking performance in a big game.
Play of the WeekMichigan State's T.J. Duckett, who ran over several defenders before twisting his way over the goal line. His battering 11-yard run with less than three minutes to play gave the Spartans a 35-28 victory over Penn State.
Best coaching callAlabama's Mike DuBose, who showed faith in his team by going for it on fourth and 3 at the Alabama 16 with his team trailing 14-8. Receiver Freddie Milons took the snap, handed to Shaun Alexander for a 4-yard gain and a first down. The Crimson Tide scored on the drive and won 28-17.
Quote of the Week"There's no better way to end it than to let them suffer," said Utah cornerback Jay Hill after the Utes wrapped up a 20-17 upset of nemesis Brigham Young. "We just had to run out the clock and we used that minute and a half to celebrate."
