COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- The University of Maryland has extended the contract of football coach Ron Vanderlinden, who brought the team to the brink of success in his third year as head coach.
Vanderlinden's five-year contract was extended two years to Jan. 31, 2004, athletic director Deborah A. Yow announced Monday. There were no changes to the original terms with a base salary of $134,175.
Vanderlinden led the Terrapins to their best season since 1995, finishing with a 5-6 record. Maryland led the Atlantic Coast Conference in rushing with 231.4 yards per game and the team was playing for a bowl bid in its final game of the season.
Yow said she and Vanderlinden had agreed it is important to improve the school's ACC and overall win-loss record in the 2000 season.
"Both of these goals are within our reach," she said.
Vanderlinden said the Terrapins have "made a great deal of progress and are close to becoming a quality football program."
