Kansas player faces drug charge Posted: Friday February 11, 2000 08:47 PM
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A University of Kansas football player and two other men were charged Friday in federal court with trying to purchase cocaine. Defensive back Tywanne M. Aldridge, 22, of Lawrence; Preston Maurice Gardenhire, 23, of Topeka, and Christopher McFarlane, 36, of Lawrence, allegedly tried to buy two kilograms of cocaine from an undercover officer Thursday in the Westport entertainment district in Kansas City. They were each charged with one count of attempting to possess with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine, and one count of possession of firearms in relation to drug trafficking. The U.S. Attorney's Office said an investigation began six to eight months ago after Aldridge allegedly told a man at a party in Lawrence that he would be interested in buying cocaine. The witness than cooperated with federal authorities, taping telephone conversations with Aldridge. The witness also wore a wire when he picked up the three men in Lawrence on Thursday and drove them to Kansas City. An undercover agent then allegedly tried to sell the cocaine to the men, who were arrested. Prosecutors say officers found three guns, ammunition and $40,000 in the car the suspects were in. If convicted, the three men would be subject to sentences of five to 40 years in prison without parole, plus up to $2 million in fines on the drug charge and five years in prison without parole and up to $250,000 in fines on the firearms charge. Aldridge is a junior defensive back from Shawnee Mission West High School.
