AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Auburn tight end Lorenzo Diamond, hospitalized in fair condition after being shot in the abdomen, told police Wednesday he was accidentally shot by his wife as they were riding in a vehicle on the university campus.

"He'll be back on his feet within days," coach Tommy Tuberville said. "In a month, he should be back working out again."

Tuberville said he spoke Wednesday morning with Diamond, whose shooting stunned Auburn players gathering for a cookout with the coach on Tuesday.

"He says he was accidentally shot by his wife in a vehicle while driving down the road. They immediately drove to the hospital," said Tuberville.

"He suffered a gunshot wound at point-blank range in the side. It was a .25-caliber automatic pistol. It was in the car. They weren't trying to hide it," the coach said.

Police said the pistol was recovered from the trunk of the Diamonds' car and that Diamond has declined to pursue any charges against his wife, Delphine.

Diamond, a 20-year-old sophomore from Biloxi, Miss., underwent surgery at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika after the shooting.

"He's a lot better this morning," said Tuberville. "He lost a lot of blood. ... I visited with the doctor. He was upbeat about the future, and said the bullet didn't hit anything major."

Tuberville said he was waiting on Diamond to arrive at a cookout for Auburn offensive players when he heard about the shooting.

"All the players were shocked," said Tuberville. "I told them he was being operated on, and they said they had been playing basketball with him only 30 minutes before."

Last season, Diamond caught 13 passes for 159 yards and scored one touchdown against Alabama. He missed Auburn's A-Day game last Saturday because of a separated shoulder.

"He's a good kid," offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone said. "He has a wife and baby, and he's good in school. He's never been in any trouble."
